In Love and In Stitches!

Hello Lovelies!

I've got some good news!

1. Austin TX Finally cooled off. I'm blogging on my porch right now, listening to It's Blitz! sipping coffee in my hoodie & it's a crisp 47°F outside! I know that doesn't sound all that cold, but for Austin TX - that's full on winter! Just sayin.

2. The Sublime Stitching/Model Citizen Ready-To-Stitch Eco Totes are in my shop! AND - they come with floss, an embroidery needle AND How To instructions! This is a limited time offer kiddos. So don't eff around! Oh and BIG THANKS to Amy Bindle of Early Bird Special for stitching the example!

3. Tonight I'll be joining my manpanion, Austin Kalman for dinner @ Uchi in celebration of our 10 year anniversary! In 1999 we both moved to Olympia WA on a whim. We met almost immediately @ Majical Journeys where we both worked as phone psychics. Yes, phone psychics! I fell for him instantly and I'm still falling for him now. It's funny, I can't get away from musicians. On one of our first dates he told me he played guitar and I said "Oh honey - we all do.." Because I'm a jerk, BUT now he's about to embark on his first UK tour with his band and one of his songs actually appeared on Guitar Hero III... So, I was a jerk who is still pulling her foot out of her mouth. I'm so proud of him! Speaking of... I'm going to get off this computer and go give him my full attention. Nothing against y'all* of course.

xo!

p.s. Expect East Austin Studio Tour updates next week!

*yeah, I said y'all. What you gonna do about it?

Wishing you a very special VD

And by VD I do mean Valentines Day. You know, with chocolates, not antibiotics.
For the occasion I put together a little lovey dovey mix. It's mellow & sweet like reading the paper in bed on Sunday morning.

These are some of my all time favorite love songs. I'm a sucker for covers so there are a few of those in here for ya.

First off we have Kiss by Scout Niblett, if you don't already know and love her then this song should seal the deal. It's about a love so wholly satisfying it completes her. Better yet it is a duet with Will Oldham of Bonnie Prince Billy fame. The video for this song is one for the record books. Do check it out.

On second base we have Let's Pretend We're Bunny Rabbits by The Magnetic Fields off of their 69 Love Songs collection. This stupidly sweet ditty that says it all.

Not to be all ga ga over Stephen Merrit of Magnetic Fields, but You You You You You by The 6ths (one of Stephens MANY bands) deserves a spot on every Love mix. This track is sung by Katherine Whalen of the Squirrel Nut Zippers. So dreamy and pure. Mmmm.

Next up, Addicted to Love by Robert Palmer. Growing up my best friend and I would sit in front of the tube soaking up as much MTV as our parents would allow. And we WERE addicted to Robert Palmer. We'd listen to this single over and over again while we crimped our hair and talked about boys we wanted to "french"... and what exactly "frenching" meant. Those were the days. Thanks Robert!
FACT: Chaka Khan was supposed to be sharing the lead vocals with Robert on this #1 single but due to contractual problems Chaka was removed from the final mix.

No. 5 The Pixies provided me with a soundtrack for my entire high school career. I'd sit in my car over lunch listening to Hey, hoping that cute loner guy who always wore black knew that I existed on some level.

Here's one of those covers I was talking about. Nouvelle Vague doing a smash up job with Modern English's Melt with You. Let the cooing begin.

I must be in a mood today because I couldn't stop myself from putting Meant To Be by the Squirrel Nut Zippers on here. It's such a fabulous song. So soft and rich, it will have you slow dancing around your house in a matter of seconds.

I know a lot of people think that Yoko might be the devil. I disagree, so now I give you "Yes I'm Your Angel". Tra la la la la!

In Spite of Ourselves by John Prine is me and Austin's FAVORITE song to sing together! Hilarious, honest, adorably crude & entirely optimistic.

We're going to wrap this up with a few more covers.

Moe Tucker's version of Be My Baby doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it's Moe Tucker. Who I love and today is about Love... geez if only there were a Moe Tucker day!

Our final track of the day is I Touch Myself by Scala & The Kolacny Brothers. Originally performed by The Divinyls, but when this Belgian girls' choir gets their hands on it the song becomes a totally different creature. Enjoy!

Happy VD Everybody!
Much Love from me to you!

After watching it a few times and falling further in love with it I felt the need to share it with you. So here it is: What's a Girl to Do by Bat For Lashes

9 Years of Awesomeness

Today, November 13th, 2008 is a pretty amazing day. It is me & Austin's 9 year anniversary.
In the fall of 1999 I moved from Dallas, TX to Olympia, WA (on a whim) to live with Eli, an old pen pal. I had no plan, no money, just a need to escape Texas. Once I arrived in the lovely northwest Eli's bf was nice enough to help me find a job. So within a few weeks I was gainfully employed at Magical Journeys as a phone psychic. No, I'm not kidding. My first day on the job I met Austin, who had just arrived from in Olympia via Houston, TX. The moment I saw him I knew I was in trouble. We sat in neighboring cubicles, peering into our crystal balls* for weeks before I had the nerve to really talk to him. Of course, we hit it off famously. Eventually we hung up on the psychic hotline & headed back to Texas. After a short & crazy stint @ a communal warehouse in Dallas (that we shared with 15 other people) we moved south to Austin TX. It has been our home for almost 8 of these 9 years. Spending practically a decade with someone isn't always easy or fun, but the good times have always out weighed the bad. He is my best friend & the most supportive partner anyone could dream of. The fact that he is incredibly talented, wonderful to look at & extremely well read doesn't hurt either.
People ask us all the time, "when are you guys going to tie the knot?"
Well... I'm happy to say that Friday, November 13th, 2009 is the big day!
It's going to be big! I'll post details as things get confirmed.
On the right here is a mini zine I made for Austin a few years ago for
Valentines. It's filled with little inside jokes & obviously lots of music references. It was a fun project that now lives on the mantle in our dining room, right by the giant 'bird of prey' kite that he got me (I'm a kite freak).
So, why am I posting a blog about how much I love this guy on the night of our anniversary rather than spending it curled up in a fancy restaurant booth with him?
Well tonight he is playing Emo's with Electric Six (the price of loving a rock star) which I'm about to get all dolled up for. Speaking of, time is slipping away! I've got to dance this mess around if I want to dress to impress!

*there weren't actually crystal balls, we read tarot cards ;)
